High school students are lacking in hard skills like reading and math, struggle to fill out job applications and don’t seem to know how to sell themselves in a job interview.

Those are among the impressions Colorado business leaders have about high school graduates trying to enter the workforce, a consultant told members of the Colorado Education Alignment Council on Tuesday.

“Education is a major concern for employers,” said consultant Walt Klein. The council was created by Gov. Bill Owens to review high school education standards.

Klein said more than 40 business leaders from Fort Collins to Pueblo and Denver to Grand Junction participated.
