Dry cider: Also called hard cider. A recipe for Cider Braised Chicken and Cabbage on March 8 called for “dry Irish cider,” and last week’s review of Z Cuisine, mentioned its “sharply sweet hard cider.” In Europe, “cider” is an alcoholic drink made from fermented apple juice, as opposed to the unfermented American kind.
