Is it real or Memorex?
KBDI-Channel 12’s annual auction of rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia from Carlos Santana, Motley Crue, Sheryl Crow, Elton John, The Rolling Stones and dozens of others rolls out Saturday and Sunday (6 p.m. both days).
Questions have been raised.
Promoter Barry Fey and a local music critic committed to host, then pulled out of the fundraiser over their concerns that much of the memorabilia is counterfeit.
“My concern is that I was under the impression that 70 percent of the rock ‘n’ roll stuff out there is phony,” Fey said. “I’m casting no aspersions on anything (in the auction) but I just don’t want to take the chance.”
Hal Grielmann, whose Spike’s Memorabilia and Framing in LoDo is supplying 150 autographed items, agrees there is a lot of fakery out there, but not his stuff. “I’ve put 12 years of my life into this store. If I sell one bogus autograph, it wipes out 12 years of stuff. I’m cautious almost to the point of absurdity.”
All his items come with a certificate of authenticity, which he regards as “a binding contract” between him and the buyer. “I say who signed, where it was signed, when it was signed and I sign it. There is no corporate b.s.; it’s me.”
Flying with Azteca
Don’t be casting your eyes skyward, looking for the Azteca America Colorado helicopter. There isn’t one.
But thanks to its duopoly with KMGH-Channel 7, AAC logged the first local live helicopter broadcast in Spanish during Monday’s immigration march to Civic Center.
Claudio Reyes narrated from Azteca’s studio the pictures provided by Channel 7’s copter. Azteca broadcasts and has offices at Channel 7.
