Films on Fillmore is one of Denver’s great summer freebies. Thursday nights, July 6-Aug. 23, the movies are free and outside at Fillmore Plaza in Cherry Creek North. About 900 people show up for the family-friendly fare on Fillmore Plaza – and considering what it costs to take the kids to the flicks these days, this is the deal. Free. Unless you stop at one of the 50 neighborhood restaurants that offer special boxed dinners for the flix.
Movies roll at dusk. This summer’s lineup: “Batman Begins,” July 6; “Fun With Dick and Jane,” July 13; “Caddy-
shack,” July 30; “Madagascar,” July 27; “Sideways,” Aug. 3; “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” Aug. 10; “Million Dollar Baby,” Aug. 17; “King Kong,” Aug. 23.
Organizers will provide board games before the movies. Drink wine when you watch “Sideways.” And during “Caddyshack,” sponsored by The International, there will be a costume contest and a Grey Goose Lounge. So they’ve got that going for them, which is nice. Free parking at the Clayton Lane garage. Summer in the city.
Going once
Looks like actor Rick Schroder has sold the ranch.
His 15,000-acre spread near Grand Junction, Mesa Mood Ranch, has been on the market for some time. Asking price: $29 million. Schroder has owned the place for more than 15 years.
The ranch was profiled last year by Ch. 2’s Asha Blake – and the segment repeats 9:30 Friday night on Blake’s “Colorado Celebrity Cribs.”
The house is simple, a 2,500-square- foot log number that may not be everyone’s dream home. But the property is incredible. Schroder lowered the price to $27 million, which was just the move someone was waiting for. Schroder has accepted an offer, but the deal has not closed and broker Billy Long will not reveal the price or the buyer’s name.
Oh say can you sing?
Two out of three Americans don’t know the words to the National Anthem – in English! So says the National Anthem Project, in town 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Six Flags Elitch Gardens and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at City Park. Listen to Denver schoolkids sing it and learn it yourself.
For Peet’s sake
To celebrate the company’s 40th birthday, Peet’s Coffee & Tea at 2500 E. Second Ave. put up a bulletin board and placed next to it pins, cards and a Polaroid camera. Patrons were encouraged to take their pics, write something down and post it on the “Family Album.”
Most posts praised the staff and the java. One couple, however, posted this under their smiling mugs: “We finalized our divorce here! Love this place! J.”
City spirit
Denver-based Sports Illustrated columnist Rick Reilly goes under the knife today to repair his Achilles tendon … Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young play Red Rocks July 17-18; Chris Isaak at City-
Lights Pavilion on July 30 … ABC News reporter Bill Blakemore has been in Aspen doing a bit on on how the burg deals with global warming. I hear all those private jets are really good for the environment … Sez who: “Never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel.” Mark Twain
