The defending champion UCLA men’s tennis team swept Colorado from the NCAA Tournament’s second round with a 4-0 victory Sunday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center in what might be the Buffs’ final match in their history. The No. 10-ranked Bruins (19-5) advanced to the round of 16 at Stanford starting Friday. No. 23 Colorado finished 20-9. UCLA’s Benjamin Kohlloeffel, the No. 1- ranked player in the country, downed CU’s Eric Molnar 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles to lead the Bruins.
Buffs’ Pifer sets Big 12 mark in 1,500 meters
Colorado’s Stephen Pifer broke the Big 12 men’s record in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3 minutes, 40.70 seconds to lead the Buffaloes to a fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Waco, Texas.
Colorado dominated the distance events, with Pete Janson adding a title in the steeplechase and Bret Schoolmeester winning in the 5K. Brent Vaughn won the 10K event Friday. Texas took the men’s and women’s team titles, while Nebraska finished second and Missouri was third in the men’s competition. Texas A&M and Nebraska followed for the women.
Grady leads CU golfers to ninth in Oklahoma
Colorado sophomore Patrick Grady posted a career-best 205 score and finished tied for fourth place after the third and final round of the 15th annual Perry Maxwell Intercollegiate at the 6,442-yard Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore, Okla. CU finished ninth with 834. Grady’s final round of 1-under-par 69 tied him with SMU’s Colt Knost. Oklahoma State’s Jonathan Moore (196) and Zack Robinson (203) took the top two spots and the Cowboys topped the team leaderboard at 785.
