Chasing down track and field championships and state records is one thing. Chasing down Buffaloes is quite another.
Littleton sprinter J.T. Scheuerman has recorded some scorching times in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes this season, including a wind-aided time of 10.39 seconds in the 100, and he has the potential to put up big points at state by himself.
But will Scheuerman, or a deep team like Fort Collins, have enough horses to catch three-time defending Class 5A boys state champion Smoky Hill?
“We are thinner than we have been in the past couple of years, and we might have a little bull’s-eye on our backs after winning the last three titles,” Smoky Hill coach Mark Cooper said. “But I think this state meet is pretty well wide open. Any team that scores 50 or 60 points has a chance, and Littleton could score 40 points with one guy alone.
“But as far as winning another state championship, I don’t look at things that way. Instead, I just want us to go in there as a team and do the best we possibly can.”
Starting on Friday, with most of the finals scheduled for Saturday, the 5A and 4A meets will be held at Jefferson County Stadium, while the 3A and 2A portions are slated for Dutch Clark Stadium in Pueblo.
While Scheuerman has speed to burn and is the one to watch in the sprints, Smoky Hill could challenge for first place in all four relay events (400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200). The Buffaloes’ greatest strength, however, is in the pole vault, a Cooper family specialty. His oldest son, Kirk, is the defending state champion and owns the best vault in the state this season with a height of 16 feet, 5 inches. He has cleared 16 feet a number of times, including in the regional meet.
Fort Collins, with its formidable distance runners and distance relay squads, could give Smoky Hill a run for that title. The storied Lambkins program has 18 boys titles in school history, including 15 straight from 1920 to 1934, but it has been a 53-year drought since the last one.
Guys such as Noah Shannon, who ran the fastest 1,600 this season, and Chad Barlow, a top 400 runner, hope to change that.
While Smoky Hill might lack in depth compared to the past three state title teams, numbers are not a problem for Mullen in the 4A hunt. The Mustangs have won nine of the past 10 team titles, including five in a row, and it will be tough to keep them from doing it again.
Speedy sophomore Jon Gaye should challenge for a title in the 200, and Mullen’s 400- and 800-relay teams will be hard to beat.
Longmont’s Austin Jurgensmeyer and Mountain View’s Ben Yeh have been neck-and-neck in the 110 and 300 hurdles all season and should provide some tight finishes.
In 3A, look for Faith Christian’s Ian Lettow in the field events. The junior has blown away the competition in the discus and shot put, and, while challenging the long-standing state records in those events might have to wait until next year, Lettow has added more than 24 feet to his discus this season.
Colorado Springs Christian is fast and has the potential to sweep the 100, 400, 800 and 1,600 if all goes well. The Lions also have a good shot at knocking off defending team champion Gunnison.
Defending state champion Limon and star sprinter Tyson Liggett are the powers in 2A, but no individual or single relay team is a clear-cut favorite in any event.
