The new Broomfield-based Central Hockey League team, the Rocky Mountain Rage, announced Thursday its first coach will be Tracy Egeland, who just completed his third season as head coach of the Rio Grande Valley (Texas) Killer Bees of the CHL.
Egeland guided the Killer Bees to the playoffs two of his three years as head coach. The 35-year-old Lethbridge, Alberta, native had a playing career that spanned 12 professional seasons with 10 teams in five leagues and ended with a shoulder injury in December 2001.
Mesa restarts wrestling with state champs
Mesa State signed 15 wrestlers to scholarships for its revived program, which has been dormant since 1991. Three of the 15 won state titles this past season: Cole Johnson of Hotchkiss High School, Chris Kennedy of Paonia High School and John Tangemen of Broomfield High School.
CSU players earn all-region softball honors
The National Fast Pitch Coaches Association named Colorado State’s Jessica Strickland and Lauren Cusick to the All-West Region Team. Strickland, who hit .415, was named to the first team as a designated player, while third baseman Cusick was named to the second team.
CU, DU golfers have ground to make up
The University of Colorado men’s golf team is tied for 19th after the first day of play at the NCAA Central Regional at Sand Ridge Golf Club in Chardon, Ohio.
The Buffs finished at 22-over-par 306. Oklahoma State leads the team standings by one stroke over Northwestern with a 4-under 280.
The University of Denver is in 22nd place at the West Regional at Omni Tucson National Golf Course with a 5-over 293, 20 strokes behind leader Florida. DU’s Charlie Soule is tied for 15th with a 3-under 69. Derrick Whiting of Colorado State is competing as an individual at the West Regional and is in a tie for 51st with a 72.
