Steamboat Springs – Colorado’s 26 ski areas crossed the 12 million skier visit threshold for the first time this winter with a record-high 12.53 million skier visits, Colorado Ski Country USA announced this morning.

The state saw more than 708,714 more skiers than last winter, thanks in part to bountiful early season snow, said Colorado Ski Country president Rob Perlman.

“We met our goal and exceeded our goal,” he said. “It’s a huge accomplishment.”

The previous record high of 11.98 million skier visits was set during the 1997-1998 winter.

Colorado led the nation in skier market share, capturing more than 21 percent of the U.S. ski business. A total of 58.8 million people hit the slopes across the country last winter, according to the Lakewood-based National Ski Areas Association.
