Summer is road trip season. While Route 66 and other cross-country drives are the classic tours by car, there are many other trips that provide great scenery and a laidback way to experience a particular region.

The July issue of Men's Journal lists 10 such itineraries, starting with a tour of the Gulf Coast. Begin your loop in Mobile Bay, Ala. Then head to Apalachicola and Panama City Beach, Fla. Next stop is Jackson, Miss., followed by New Orleans. End with a swamp tour of the wildlife in Atchafalaya, La.

Nine other road trip from the latest issue of Men's Journal magazine:

–The Michigan coast, 176 miles from Manistee to Charlevoix.

–The Southwest desert from Taos, N.M., to Moab, Utah, 500 miles.

–Walla Walla, Wash., to Lakeview, Ore., 750 miles on the Backcountry route, a dirt road. (You'll need an appropriate vehicle.)

–Red Lodge to Cook City, Mont., 66 miles of switchbacks on the Beartooth Highway, en route to Yellowstone.

–Boise to Ketchum, Idaho, 157 miles of Hemingway country. Bring your fishing pole!

–From Asheville, N.C., to Norfolk, Va., 410 miles, with a few minor league games along the way–teams like the Asheville Tourists and the Durham Bulls.

–In New England, Montpelier, Vt., to Portland, Maine, on Route 302, will take you past Mount Washington in New Hampshire's White Mountains.

— A loop around Lake Tahoe, starting at Tahoe City, Calif., to the south shore casinos, Sand Harbor State Park on the east shore and back to Tahoe City for a raft trip on the Truckee River.

–For music-lovers, the 770 miles between Austin, Texas, and Memphis, Tenn., where you can check out clubs and festivals for country, the blues and cajun.
