For 50 years managers of Jay Peak Resort have talked about and planned for a golf course. Now, the first nine holes are open.
Officials from Vermont and Quebec turned out June 30 at the first hole, accompanied by bagpipers, to formally open the course.
The resort expects to expand the course to a full 18 holes and may add an indoor water park and a 100-room hotel within two years.
It's part of a larger expansion plan, designed to increase Jay Peak's year-round business, in which townhouses, single-family homes and condominiums. Resort officials said 350 people are working this summer, significantly up from the 50 in recent summers. About 750 work at the resort in the winter.
