Man on stolen motorcycle killed in crash with pickup

A man riding a stolen motorcycle was killed when he ran a red light and crashed into a pickup Sunday morning, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The motorcycle was reported stolen out of Lakewood about 12:30 a.m.

About 9 a.m., the 2003 Yamaha was southbound on Sheridan Boulevard when the driver ran a red light and collided with a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche, according to the State Patrol report.

At the time of the collision, the driver of the pickup was trying to turn left onto northbound Sheridan Boulevard from eastbound West 52nd Avenue, the report said.

The drivers’ identities were not released Sunday.

Sheridan Boulevard was closed for several hours while an investigation was conducted.

Perlmutter campaign has raised $1 million

Ed Perlmutter has raised more than $1 million in his bid for the 7th Congressional District, far outpacing his two Democratic rivals, according to campaign finance reports filed over the weekend.

Peggy Lamm has reported raising a little less than $650,000, and Herb Rubenstein has raised $194,000, the reports for the period ending June 20 show.

The winner of the Aug. 8 primary faces Rick O’Donnell, the lone Republican, who has reported raising $1.2 million.

The 7th District, with a nearly even split of Republicans, Democrats and independents, is one of the most closely watched races in the country.

Bear injures woman camping near resort

Wildlife agents are looking for a bear that injured a camper on Grand Mesa near Powderhorn Resort.

“It wasn’t that the bear attacked her,” said Randy Hampton, spokesman for the Colorado Division of Wildlife. “The bear came into her tent, and when she surprised him, he took a swipe at her.”

The woman, whose name was not released, yelled at the bear and it fled Saturday morning.

Hampton said the woman required 12 stitches to her right thigh at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction.

If caught, the bear will be killed, Hampton said.

Student bomber not a terrorist, FBI says

A University of Oklahoma student from Colorado who blew himself up outside a packed football stadium was not a terrorist, Oklahoma’s top FBI agent said.

“We have no evidence he had a social or political agenda that he was trying to bring attention to,” Salvador Hernandez, the FBI’s special agent in charge in Oklahoma, told The Oklahoman. “We don’t consider this terrorism the way we define it.”

Joel “Joe” Henry Hinrichs III, a 21-year-old engineering student from Colorado Springs, died Oct. 1 when his bomb went off at a campus bench a short distance from an OU night football game.

Search suspended for boy who fell in lake

Crews suspended their search early Sunday evening for a 2-year-old boy who reportedly fell off a boat into Carter Lake in Larimer County, after using cameras and Global Positioning System and sonar equipment to search depths up to 130 feet.

Recovery operations were expected to resume Tuesday, when technical sonar equipment was to arrive from out of state, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Eloise Campanella said in a news release. Beyond 130 feet, divers had no visibility, she said.

“They’ve exhausted everything as far as our capabilities go,” Campanella said. “Without some high-tech equipment, there’s really nothing else we can do.”

The boy was reported missing to the Sheriff’s Office about 8 p.m. Saturday. The toddler was in a ski boat with two adults, one of whom was his father from Longmont, and another 3-year-old child, Campanella said.
