Jackson Hole Arts Festival is a family-friendly event, with food, cowboy poetry, ranch tours
This year’s Jackson Hole Arts Festival runs Sept. 8-17 and offers two new events: historic ranch tours and a special collectors look at Jackson’s contemporary art scene. Several parts of the festival involve food, including the Palates & Palettes Gallery Walk, which pairs chefs’ tastings with a stroll through participating galleries, and the Taste of the Tetons, while the Cowboy Jubilee Music and Poetry Roundup features live music and a funny look at the cowboy life. Francisca’s Restaurant is a culinary oasis in Four Corners area; check out tortillas, tamales
In the Four Corners area, pickings tend to be slim for vegetarians, especially those who love Mexican food, so Francisca’s Restaurant in tiny, dry Cortez is a godsend. The pliant homemade tortillas are savory little ovals, fresh from the griddle, almost as good as the delectably fluffy meatless tamales the restaurant serves for dinner. The tamale plate features three tamales (pork or vegetarian) that come with creamy refried beans, red or green chile, spicy rice and a hot sopaipilla. Though Francisca’s is open for lunch and dinner, the tamales usually are available only for dinner. Call ahead and the chef will fix a to-go bag.
