Denver police brought their radar guns into Washington Park on Tuesday and ticketed a number of bicyclists for breaking the posted 15 mph speed limit.
A police spokesman said he didn’t know how many tickets were written, but saw officers hand out five in about a half-hour. The speeding tickets carry a fine of $54.
That prompted the director of Bicycle Colorado to urge Denver to create more bicycle lanes among the city’s streets.
“Very few streets around Washington Park have bike lanes,” said Dan Grunig, director of the nonprofit bike advocacy group. “When Denver builds incomplete streets and cuts back on bike lanes, there’s little surprise that bicyclists want to ride in the park.”
He cited Boulder, Fort Collins and Colorado Springs as being bike-friendly, adding that bicycling cuts pollution, relieves traffic congestion and parking, and improves health and fitness.
Police spokesman John White said a survey last year in Washington Park counted 15,004 bicycles in one day, with an average speed of 17-19 mph, with one rider clocked at 34 mph.
