Questions and answers about air travel in the aftermath of the British terror plot:
What’s banned from carry-on luggage?
Basically, any liquid. That includes beverages, pourable foods such as sauces and syrups, shampoo, conditioner, hair gels, creams, toothpaste, sunscreen, contact-lens solution, perfume, lotions, fluid makeup and liquid soap.
Can I put these banned liquids in my checked luggage?
Yes.
Are their exceptions to the carry-on ban?
Yes. They include baby formula, breast milk or juice (if you’re traveling with a baby), labeled prescription medicines issued in the passenger’s name, and certain essential non-prescription medicines such as insulin. But they must be presented for inspection at the checkpoint. (Thursday, baby food jars were confiscated at Denver International Airport.)
What about electronics?
The Transportation Security Administration says it will continue to allow laptop computers, cell phones and other electronic items to be carried aboard domestic flights.
What about drinks I buy after going through security?
You must drink or throw away beverages purchased on concourses before boarding your plane. The same goes for other banned items sold on concourses, including goods from duty-free shops. Some DIA stores stopped selling such items Tuesday.
Will my carry-on bag be searched?
TSA plans more hand searches of bags at security checkpoints and more bag checks at the boarding gate.
Should I pack any differently than usual?
It’ll be easier to search and screen your carry-on bag if you pack lightly, without clutter.
Should I check my carry-on bag at the ticket counter?
That’s one way to get through security faster. Some airlines are waiving extra-baggage charges for passengers who need to check their carry-on bags. Call your airline to be sure.
How early should I get to the airport?
TSA advises arriving at least two hours ahead of flight time. United, Frontier, Continental and some other airlines suggest getting there at least three hours early.
Are flights being delayed?
Some airlines Thursday delayed flights to allow passengers stuck at security checkpoints enough time to board. Be sure to call or go online to check your flight’s status before leaving for the airport.
Can I postpone my flight?
Several airlines are allowing passengers bound for the United Kingdom to change their flight plans without penalty. Some are also allowing penalty-free rescheduling on domestic flights, at least for the next day or two. Check with your airline for details.
Are there special rules for flights to the United Kingdom?
Extra carry-on restrictions may be in place, including bans on carrying electronics aboard. Contact your airline for details.
