Westminster’s Paul Wasicka stood in second place and was one of five remaining players late Thursday at the final table of the World Series of Poker at the Rio Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Wasicka’s $14.56 million in chips trailed tall-stack Jamie Gold at $51.175 million. Allen Cunningham was third at $13.68 million. The tournament was expected to last into this morning. The winner was to earn $12 million, with second place earning $6,102,499. The tournament’s buy-in was $10,000.

CU’s Grady leads stroke play

University of Colorado player Patrick Grady, also of Omni Interlocken Golf Course, has a two-stroke lead after shooting an opening-round 66 at the Colorado Golf Association Stroke Play Championship at Boulder Country Club. David Delich of Broadmoor G.C. and Klinton Krieger of Pelican Lakes C.C. are tied for second with 68s. Six players are tied at 69.

Brooke Collins of Omni Interlocken began her round with three birdies on the front nine and went on to win the Colorado Women’s Golf Association Junior Stroke Play Championship at City Park G.C., beating Melissa Martin of Bookcliff C.C. by two strokes.

Adams State hires former CSU player Bauer

Casey Bauer, a standout player at Montezuma-Cortez High School and Colorado State, was hired as the new assistant women’s volleyball coach at Adams State. Adams State coach Lindy Mortensen said in a release she has followed Bauer’s career and Bauer was the obvious choice when an assistant’s position opened up.
