Air Force offensive line coach Pete Hurt will be allowed to return to the team Monday after being put on paid suspension for “inappropriate striking of a player.”
Falcons athletic director Hans Mueh said Wednesday an internal investigate reveals “this was a one-time incident and not something consistent with Pete’s coaching methods or character. I’m confident that this will not happen again and we consider the incident closed.”
Hurt, who is in his second season at the academy, was suspended Aug. 16, one week after he hit a player during a morning practice. He was not allowed to have contact with the team during his suspension.
Wyoming defense shines
Wyoming solidified its revamped defense in a scrimmage at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie.
The scrimmage highlighted a new defensive scheme and resulted in five forced turnovers.
“There was lots of hustle by the defense,” coach Joe Glenn said. “They made some excellent plays. It sure looks like the 3-4 (defensive set) is a great fit for us.”
Among the defensive highlights, a bumbled screen pass was fumbled and defensive end Corey Mace, a 6-foot-3, 276- pound senior, returned the ball 74 yards for a touchdown. And two freshmen, cornerback Marcel Gipson and defensive tackle John Fletcher, intercepted passes.
The offense was highlighted by a perfect day from two place-kickers. Jake Scott went 3-for-3 on field goals of 39, 50 and 31 yards, and Cherry Creek alum Aric Goodman hit on kicks of 43, 50 and 31 yards. Both kickers are freshmen.
“It’s going to be hard to pick one,” Glenn said. “They are two very strong kickers for a couple of young guys.”
Starting quarterback Jake Doss completed 13-of-20 passes for 96 yards. But the offensive line’s execution was lacking, Glenn said.
“We were too soft in pass protection, and didn’t stay with our blocks in the running game,” Glenn said. “We need to show up better in that offensive line.”
