BECAUSE YOU ASKED

Q: I keep seeing a photo of a water mill and was told it is a Colorado landmark. Can you tell me where it is?

A: You are probably referring to the Crystal Mill near Marble, which is thought to be one of the most photographed places in the state. It was not really a mill but was used for generating power. The town of Crystal is now a ghost town.

Q: I have a question that has puzzled me for two years. About two years ago, the highway department put the cable-retainer system in the center of C-470 from South Quebec Street to South Broadway. Since that time, the north-side grass gets mowed periodically, but the grass (weeds) on the south side of the cable has never been mowed. How come?

A: The Colorado Department of Transportation has policies regarding lane closures to minimize impact to travelers. Because of these policies, the eastbound direction can be mowed only during nighttime hours. The eastbound direction requires a lane closure for safety reasons, so CDOT has to schedule everything far in advance, as crews have to come in early to be able to work when it is light enough to see but also when traffic volumes are not as heavy.

Normally, the crews come in much later when it is dark and unsafe for them to mow. The department is able to mow the westbound direction during the day without lane closures because of the roadway configuration, so it gets mowed more often, as it requires less cost and coordination.
