When it comes to landing big fish on light tackle, Curtis Tarver’s recent catch of a 30-pound channel catfish is hard to beat.
Fishing at Lon Hagler Reservoir on Aug. 19, Tarver landed the 36-inch-long monster on 4-pound test line.
“He wore me out,” the Aurora resident said of a 45-minute skirmish. “I had to come home and take a Tylenol.”
The line can be explained by the fact that Tarver, for whom Lon Hagler is a prime destination, expected to catch crappie and smallish catfish on his minnow-and-bobber rig. But landing big fish on 4-pound test is nothing new for him. He got a 19 1/2-pound wiper a couple years ago at North Sterling Reservoir using the same rig.
