Amber Sutherland’s 15 kills, 17 digs and five blocks led the University of Colorado volleyball team to a three-match victory Thursday over Cincinnati to open the Colorado Invitational in Boulder.

The match marked the return to coaching of former Colorado State assistant Andy Klussmann, who was sidelined by a 2004 car accident in which his wife, Janna, was killed and he was badly injured. Klussmann is temporarily taking the place of CU assistant Jil Thomason while she is on maternity leave.

Rapids out of hot water with MLS officials

Major League Soccer will not discipline Rapids players for a postgame celebration that Real Salt Lake owner Dave Checketts said was obscene.

MLS commissioner Don Garber reviewed video of the celebration after the Rapids’ 1-0 victory Saturday.

“The committee found no evidence of any obscene behavior by any Colorado Rapids player or any actions that require disciplinary penalties,” Garber said.

Garber said the league would also address security concerns at Rice-Eccles Stadium, where fans threw objects on the field during and after the game.

Murphy, wire-to-wire, wins Senior Stroke Play

Steve Murphy of Canterberry Golf Course was the only player to shoot under par and led from the start to win the Colorado Golf Association Senior Stroke Play Championship at the The Heritage at Westmoor in Westminster. Murphy’s final-round 77 gave him a three-day total of 214, 2 under par. Three golfers – Richard Gorbell of Pine Creek GC, Rick George of Castle Pines GC and Robert Polk of The Pinery CC – shot 219 for a share of second place.
