SANDWICH HEAVEN
Pass Key Restaurant
518 E. Abriendo Ave., Pueblo; 719-546-1850
1901 W. U.S. 50, Pueblo; 719-542-9144
You’d be hard-pressed to find a Pueblo native unfamiliar with the Pass Key’s legendary sausage sandwiches. Built on French bread with a hearty slate of condiments, the key is the slick combination of slabs of spicy sausage and sauteed onions. It’s plain and simple magic, with a side of oversized fries. The exact recipe remains a mystery – a fact that ensures repeat visits, and the success of its second outpost on U.S. 50.
ROADSIDE ATTRACTION
Steamboat Lake State Park Visitor Center
27 miles north of the intersection of U.S. 40 and Routt County Road 129, 970-879-3922
Road trippers know the value of the state’s visitor centers, where a traveler can grab a map, pick up brochures for the local tourist traps and count on the comfort of a clean restroom. But the center located at Steamboat Lake in Routt National Forest territory stands out as a destination in itself. In this mini-museum you’ll find displays on local history, a zoo’s worth of stuffed wildlife and best of all, a backyard that opens up to one of the best vistas in the country. Look for it just past Hahn’s Peak Village, on Routt County Road 129.
