Highlands Ranch has its very own version of “The Karate Kid” these days.
Ten-year-old Tyler Weaver Jr. is back from Disney World, where he won the U.S. Open Martial Arts Championships for his age bracket this summer. He’s a fifth-grader at Northridge Elementary and don’t give him any lip.
Tyler’s been a black belt since he was 9 – thanks in large part to his pop, Tyler Weaver Sr., who runs Championship Karate school in Littleton.
“(Tyler) wasn’t even supposed to be in the tournament,” says dad. “It’s really a Cinderella story.”
Tyler and his mom and dad were skedded to fly to L.A. on Friday to appear on the premiere of the “Megan Mullally Show” with Will Ferrell and Jenny McCarthy. Not bad. You can catch it at 10 a.m. Monday on Channel 20.
Wheelies
Don Claps of Broomfield was on “Live with Regis and Kelly” Wednesday smashing his Guinness world record for doing the most cartwheels in one hour. He came in with a whopping 1,293 (oh, my tummy hurts), beating his former record of a measly 1,076.
Back home on Thursday, Claps, a 41-year-old real estate agent, explained that he’s always been a gymnast and it all started when he cartwheeled the 10k Bolder Boulder in 2004. Then he went for the Guinness world record, and he cartwheeled the Bolder Boulder again this year as a fundraiser for Children’s Hospital.
On “Live” he cartwheeled for an hour up and down Columbus Avenue in NYC, then went inside the studio and did a few more for the heck of it.
“I guess I’m a tough little guy,” he says. “But I’m pretty sore today.”
Kids
Look how well-behaved most kids and grandkids of Denver big-buck families are. Well, there are glaring exceptions, of course – and the worst one out there these days is Brandon Davis, son of Nancy Davis and grandson of oilman Marvin and Barbara Davis. This is from Thursday’s NY Daily News about Brandon’s arrival at one of the Fashion Week shows: “‘Is there a bar here?’ Davis grunted as he entered the W Lifestyles Lounge, cigarettes in hand. Hey, wasn’t he just in rehab after that ‘firecrotch’ incident?
“With slicked-back hair and a pastel silk jacket, Davis stood by the bar, repeatedly wiped his nose with his thumb, licked his fingers to fix his eyebrows, chugged vodka and glared. ‘He looks like the bloated, inbred offspring of Elvis Presley,’ one onlooker snickered.”
Run for your life
Look for Dean Karnazes to run the Boulder Backroads Marathon on Sept. 24. This guy is the star of the Endurance 50 – running 50 marathons and 50 states in 50 days. That’s not a typo. He starts today with the Lewis & Clark Marathon in St. Charles, Mo. Boulder will be his eighth stop, for one of eight marathons he will run live. The other 52 he’ll follow the route. If he lives that long.
City spirit
Mayor John Hickenlooper’s downtown loft is under contract … Hey bold names: Save Oct. 12 for the opening party for Prime 121, Clayton Lane’s new steakhouse helmed by Scott Fickling … Friday marked the halfway point to St. Paddy’s Day … Fans of Weekly World News will be happy to hear “Bat Boy: The Musical” runs through next weekend at Lakewood Cultural Center … Sez who: “You know, there’s something about me that makes a lot of people want to throw up.” Pat Boone
