The University of Wyoming will dedicate a new track in the memory of eight school cross country runners who were killed five years ago by a drunken driver.
The dedications of the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex and Memorial 8 Track are scheduled for Friday afternoon.
On Sept. 16, 2001, eight members of the Wyoming cross country team were returning from Fort Collins when the Jeep Wagoneer they were in was hit head-on by a pickup truck. All eight were killed. The driver survived the crash and is serving a 14- to 20-year prison sentence for aggravated vehicular homicide.
The facility will include an all-weather outdoor track, jumping pits, throwing rings and storage units for soccer and track and field equipment, a scoreboard and a picnic area.
“This is a big moment for our program,” Wyoming track and field coach Don Yentes said. “It’s probably the biggest thing that’s ever happened for our program.”

The seats will be between the free-throw lines in a second courtside row, in front of sections 124 and 126, and will offer in-seat food and beverage service. The tickets cost $385 per game.
