ARVADA – The driver of a Vespa was killed Tuesday evening after his scooter collided with a pickup truck at a busy intersection on Sheridan Boulevard and then was struck by a second motorist, who fled, police said.

Authorities did not identify the victim, saying only that he was a man in his early 20s and that he is believed to have been an Arvada resident.

The driver of a black pickup that killed the man and fled the scene was arrested a short time later, Arvada police spokeswoman Susan Medina said.

Police were dispatched about 7:30 p.m., to the intersection of West 64th Avenue and Sheridan, where the driver of the Vespa was clipped by a vehicle in the intersection. A second pickup then struck him, Medina said. The victim died at the scene, she said.

The driver who fled was arrested about an hour later in Arvada, Medina said.

Medina declined to release the name of the pickup driver.
