A federal fugitive who was recaptured in 2004 after he lunged with a knife at a U.S. marshal and led authorities on a wild chase in a carjacked vehicle has had five years in federal prison tacked on to his 40-year state sentence.

Joseph John Belville, 35, was in federal custody in August 2004 on a parole violation when he escaped in Denver from a prison van.

Belville was spotted two days later by marshals. When one marshal cornered the fugitive, Belville pulled a knife and ran. He then carjacked a vehicle. Authorities chased Belville, with several collisions occurring along the way, before the chase ended when a marshal’s car rammed the fleeing vehicle.

U.S. District Judge Wiley Daniel on Monday sentenced Belville to five years in federal prison for the escape. Belville already is serving a 40-year sentence on a variety of state charges related to his escape, including second-degree assault, vehicular eluding, menacing, weapon possession by a convict and being a habitual criminal.
