SPOTLIGHT ON …

THE 7TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT

Location: The 7th Congressional District includes parts of Adams, Jefferson and Arapahoe counties, extending from eastern rural Adams County to the city of Golden on the west.

Main cities: Brighton, Edgewater, Golden, Wheat Ridge, Commerce City, Lakewood and portions of Arvada, Aurora and Bennett. Most of the population is in Jefferson County, with that county having 209,352 of the 359,659 registered voters in the district.

Voter registration: The district is one of the most evenly split in the country (Democrats have a slight edge), making it a bellwether district: Democrats, 121,779; Republicans, 113,346; unaffiliated, 123,403; other, 1,131.

Political race: The race between Democrat Ed

Perlmutter and Republican Rick O’Donnell is one of the most-watched congressional races in the country because it could contribute to a change in the balance of power in Congress if Democrats win enough seats. The congressional seat became open when incumbent Rep. Bob Beauprez entered the race for governor.
