“Shagman” spoof is wheeling, dealing

Rocky’s Autos has gotten into the campaign spirit with an ad that spoofs Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez’s “I want you to hold me accountable” television spots, complete with American flags and patriotic music.

“I want you to hold me accountable for getting you a great deal,” the “Shagman” tells viewers.

“This ad was paid for by our previous customers.”

Hot time in Rifle for energy debate

The Rifle High School auditorium was a little overheated Wednesday evening before an energy debate between Beauprez and Democratic rival Bill Ritter got underway. So all the campaign literature that had been hung on seat backs got put to good use – as fans.

“You look like Southern Baptists,” moderator Ron Milhorn told the audience after asking the two candidates if they would like towels to mop up the sweat.

President passes up driving by protests

A Democratic group protested President Bush’s trip to Colorado to raise money for Beauprez last week, but Bush might not have known about it until he read the news. The presidential motorcade did not pass a single protester.

A Freudian slip by the governor?

At the fundraiser, Gov. Bill Owens spoke and got a big laugh when he flubbed a line and said, “I’m proud of the honor that you’ve given me through the two terms that I’ve served as president – as, as, governor.”

“Suing machine” on Ritter’s help list

Another lawyer popped up on Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill Ritter’s list of contributors. But Scott Sullan isn’t just any lawyer.

He’s the “one-man suing machine.”

In 2004, Sullan was the chief proponent of a proposed constitutional amendment to make it easier to sue homebuilders, and his opponents dubbed him the one-man suing machine.

At that time, one of Sullan’s chief opponents was Evan Dreyer, who served as spokesman for Coloradans for Responsible Reform.

Last week, Dreyer said he wasn’t aware that Sullan was a Ritter contributor.

“I was in the other room,” quipped Dreyer.

Owens fesses up about torching field

Owens got a long-burning secret off his chest last week.

Owens called into the Dom and Jane morning radio show to confess that he accidentally torched the McLean Junior High School football field in Fort Worth, Texas, when he was 12 years old and playing with matches.

Owens spokesman Dan Hopkins sighed when he was asked later about the governor’s broadcast confession. “It’s been a secret for many years,” Hopkins said. “He feels cleansed now.”

IN THE WEEK AHEAD:

Ritter supporters will be holding more than 80 simultaneous house parties tonight, which will feature a conference call from Ritter at 6:30. To host a party, head here: www.party2win.com/ritterforgovernor/index.cfm

Beauprez and Owens will crisscross the state on Monday, campaigning in Loveland, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction and Pueblo and at the Broncos game.
