There will be no boring, old ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of Rumbi Island Grill in Boulder’s new 29th Street Mall.

The fast-casual restaurant serving tropical fare will be blessed Tuesday by a bare-chested, western Samoan high chief who will conduct a private, nondenominational ceremony featuring native Hawaiian dances, songs and maile leis flown in from Hawaii. Guests should also look for the unblemished sea salt and tea leaves, which symbolize good fortune.

The privately owned and operated restaurant chain, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, where it launched in 2000, has more than 15 locations and plans to open 175 new venues in Arizona, California, Colorado and Utah in the next five years. The new Boulder restaurant is Rumbi Island’s fifth Colorado location.

In the mood for “Voodoo chicken salad,” or “Volcano blackened mahi?” The new restaurant, located at 1675 29th St., Boulder, will open to the public Thursday.
