DECKERS – The Colorado Department of Transportation is scheduled to reopen Colorado 67 between Deckers and Westcreek today.

The 10-mile stretch, the only highway directly connecting Deckers to Woodland Park, was washed away by floodwaters in July.

CDOT paved and striped a new road.

New telescope ready for first rays of light

A $50 million optical observatory in the Magdalena Mountains is ready to receive the first rays of light through its 2.4-meter telescope, New Mexico Tech officials said Thursday.

The Magdalena Ridge Observatory is near the summit of the 10,800-foot range, about 30 miles west of the school’s campus in Socorro.

Researchers said it should produce some of the most detailed data ever obtained on nearby asteroids and the far reaches of the universe.

The observatory features two facilities – a single 2.4-meter- diameter telescope and a moveable array of up to 10 1.4-meter- diameter telescopes, which are linked together to form a single optical interferometer.

Scientists said initial research projects for the 2.4-meter telescope will involve “classical astronomy,” starting with a study of small bodies in our solar system, primarily near-Earth objects such as asteroids.

Parents charged with kidnapping daughter

They are described as concerned parents worried about their 21-year-old daughter’s choice in marriage.

A prosecutor, however, has a different portrayal of Lemuel and Julia Redd. He said they used force while driving Julianna more than 200 miles to Colorado on the eve of her wedding.

The Redds made their first court appearance Thursday, a brief hearing to inform them of second-degree kidnapping charges, which carry a punishment of one to 15 years in prison.

“They forced her back into the van that they were driving,” Utah County Attorney Kay Bryson said.

Their attorney, Greg Skordas, insisted no law was broken. “These are concerned parents who were exercising their rights as parents.”
