Durango – The Fort Lewis men’s soccer team got five goals from five players in a 5-2 victory over Seattle University in an NCAA Division II men’s quarterfinal match at Dirks Field.

John Cunliffe scored his 27th goal of the year in the 37th minute, and his assist of Kieran Hall’s goal in the 68th minute capped the scoring for the defending national champion Skyhawks (20-1-1).

Fort Lewis advanced to the semifinals to face the winner of today’s match between Lincoln Memorial (14-1-3) and host Northern Kentucky (16-2-3).

After David Barden and Cunliffe put Fort Lewis ahead 2-0, Seattle (12-8-1) cut the lead in half with an unassisted goal from Sean Rawson in the 47th minute.

But Fort Lewis responded with three unanswered goals, two of them assisted by Ben Gantenbein. Nick Kirchoff scored in the 57th and Cliff Wilmes followed in the 64th.

Women’s soccer

METRO STATE 2, CAL-SAN DIEGO 0

Vanessa Mais and Kylee Hanavan scored to lead Metro State to an upset victory over No. 3-ranked California-San Diego in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II tournament at Auraria Field.

Metro State (22-2-0) will face West Chester (Pa.) (23-0) in the semifinals on Thursday at the Fall Sports Festival grounds in Pensacola, Fla.

Cal-San Diego (20-2-2) was held scoreless for just the second time this season. But it was the 17th shutout by the Roadrunners.

COLORADO VS. DENVER

Boulder – Colorado and Denver, both first-round winners on Friday, will square off today at noon at Prentup Field in the NCAA Division I Tournament’s round of 32.

On Friday, Colorado (13-5-4) erased a one-goal deficit for a come-from-behind 2-1 victory Colorado College and now has the second-most wins in school history.

Denver on Friday won its 16th consecutive game, a 1-0 victory over Kentucky. It was the Pioneers’ first NCAA tournament win in four tries.

Denver’s previous loss came against Colorado, 1-0 Sept. 15.

Women’s volleyball

WEST TEXAS A&M 3, MESA STATE 2

Canyon, Texas – West Texas A&M outlasted Mesa State, the last remaining Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference team, for a third-round victory in the NCAA Division II tournament.

West Texas A&M came from behind to win the Southwest Regional title 27-30, 30-26, 30-19, 22-30 and 15-7.

Mesa State (19-15) on Friday got by Metro State with a 3-2 victory.

West Texas A&M (32-3) will face Lock Haven (Pa.) (31-5), the Atlantic Region champion, in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Men’s and women’s cross country

DIVISION III WEST REGIONAL

Chino, Calif. – The Colorado College cross country team earned a men’s individual title and a women’s team runner-up finish at the West Region championships.

Julian Boggs, a 2005 All-American, won the men’s 8K title and qualified for next week’s NCAA championships in Wilmington, Ohio. Boggs will be joined by teammates Alex Nicholas and Kiran Moorty, after they finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Colorado College women’s team was led by Angie Kremer’s 11th-place finish in the 6K race. The Tigers’ runner-up finish qualifies them for a berth in next week’s NCAA Division III championships.

The Colorado College men finished fourth in the team standings. Willamette University won both team titles.
