A transformer explosion near Arapahoe Road and Dayton Street sent a plume of black smoke into the air Tuesday afternoon, knocking out power to 15,000 Xcel Energy customers for almost two hours.

The explosion happened about 3 p.m., and the power outage affected streetlights, causing massive backups along Arapahoe Road.

Power was restored by 4:40 p.m., Xcel Energy spokeswoman Ethnie Groves said.

Parts of Centennial Airport also lost power. However, operations were not slowed because the tower runs on a power generator, an airport operations official said.

Groves said it was not known why the transformer blew.

Residents and businesses between Parker and Quebec and Belleview and Dry Creek lost power during the outage, Groves said.
