At its recent meeting in Colorado Springs, the Colorado Wildlife Commission established dates for 2007 turkey seasons. Spring season will be April 14-May 27; the fall hunt will be Sept. 1-Oct. 7.
The policy body also approved increasing access to the Spanish Peaks Wildlife Area for mobility-impaired hunters, established youth licenses in units 107, 124, 125 and 129 and opened additional hunting opportunity in units 101, 102 and 139.
Keeping Colorado wild
The Colorado Division of Wildlife has launched its public education campaign detailing the agency’s activities in serving the interests of wildlife, sportsmen and wildlife watchers.
Using the theme “Keeping Colorado Wild,” the program utilizes television, public radio, billboards and the public education program to spread a message under sponsorship of the Wildlife Management Education Fund. The Colorado Legislature approved a 75-cent surcharge on hunting and fishing licenses to pay for the program.
Parks pass on sale
The 2007 Colorado State Parks pass is available online at www.parks.state.co.us as well as offices in Colorado Springs, Grand Junction and Littleton. Many King Soopers, Safeway, Sportsman’s Warehouse and REI stores also issue the pass, which costs $55 and is valid from date of purchase through Dec. 31, 2007.
Larger Vallecito trout
In an effort to thwart hungry northern pike, the Division of Wildlife stocked 45,000 13-inch rainbow trout Tuesday at Vallecito Reservoir northeast of Durango.
The strategy involves planting the fish later in the season, when pike metabolism has slowed. Also, this trout should survive predation from all but the largest pike while reducing the food source for smaller pike.
