More people are expected to fly and hit the road this Thanksgiving than ever before and more of them will be heading farther from home, according to AAA Colorado.

An estimated 38.3 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more, a 2.7 percent increase over last year’s holiday.

Those who are driving will be paying an average of 9 cents less for a gallon of gas in Colorado than a year ago, AAA said.

Travelers will have to pay more for other things. Hotel rates are up by as much as 16 percent and airfares are an average of 4 percent higher than last Thanksgiving.

Despite that, AAA Colorado said its airline and hotel bookings are up 33 percent. In Colorado, the top destinations are Denver, Eagle, Colorado Springs, Glenwood Springs and Montrose.

Across the country, small towns and rural areas are the most popular destinations, attracting 45 percent of travelers. AAA said 35 percent of Thanksgiving travelers would head to cities, 8 percent to the mountains and 5 percent to beaches.
