A transformer explosion at Arapahoe Road and Dayton sent a plume of black smoke into the air this afternoon, and knocked out power to about 15,000 people.

South Metro Fire was responding to fight the fire.

Xcel Energy spokesperson Ethnie Groves said it’s not yet known why the transformer blew.

The boundaries for the power outage are Parker to Quebec and Bellevue to Dry Creek.

Traffic lights were affected at several intersections, and Greenwood Village officials advised drivers to treat all affected intersections as 4-way stops.

Groves expected power to be restored by about 6 p.m.
