Prosecutors in Grand Junction have filed attempted first-degree murder charges against a Colorado Springs man accused of shooting at officers and ramming police cars last week.

Andrew Ryan Young, 28, faces 33 counts including attempted murder, assault on a peace officer, criminal trespass, vehicle theft, attempted vehicle theft, eluding, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a weapon by a previous offender and being a special offender.

The charges were filed Tuesday.

Prosecutors claim Young stole a car from an ex-girlfriend in Boulder on Nov. 11 and drove to Grand Junction, where he was stopped for a traffic violation on Nov. 13.

He is accused of pointing a gun at the officer and speeding off with police in pursuit, ramming three unmarked patrol cars at a roadblock and firing at an officer.

Police returned fire, and the wounded man surrendered, court documents said.

Young was being held on $800,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 5.

District Attorney Pete Hautzinger will determine whether the officers were justified in shooting Young, Mesa County sheriff’s Sgt. Matt Lewis said.
