Three people from Denver and two from Utah were killed when the driver of a pickup lost control and struck an oncoming pickup on Interstate 80 over the weekend, the Nebraska State Patrol said today.
The dead were identified as Maria Avalos, 32, and her sons Alexandro Ulloa, 3, and Avan Ulloa, 2 months, all of Denver; and Rafael Castro Recendez, 34, and Ortensia Julio, both of West Valley, Utah. Julio’s age was not known.
Vincent Ulloa, 35, of Denver, husband of Avalos and father of the two boys, was in serious condition Monday after surgery.
All were riding in a westbound Ford F-150. It was not immediately known who was driving.
Two people in the other pickup were taken to a hospital with multiple broken bones and were listed in good condition Monday.
They were identified as Kenneth Husted, 48, of Lincoln and his 13-year-old son, Ross Husted.
The Ford was westbound on I-80 in freezing drizzle about 19 miles east of Kearney on Sunday when it crossed the median, clipped an eastbound car and collided with an eastbound Dodge pickup, State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins.
She said the drizzle may have contributed to the crash.
