BRIDGETOWN, Barbados-

Air Jamaica has announced it will offer daily, nonstop service between New York and Barbados starting next month, taking up a route that is being canceled by Caribbean Airlines.

The airline will fly from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport each day at 7 a.m. and offer a flight from Barbados departing at 6:45 p.m., Campbell Rudder, Air Jamaica’s director of sales for the northeast United States, said. The service begins Jan. 10.

Barbados’ tourism minister, Noel Lynch, said the service came at a critical time. “The decision of Caribbean Airlines to pull its nonstop flight caused concern within the tourism fraternity, business travelers and all Barbadians who travel,” Lynch said. Caribbean Airlines, which has been formed to replace Trinidad-owned BWIA when it shuts down on Dec. 31, announced Monday it would discontinue flights between Barbados and several U.S. cities including New York.
