Who: Dan and Sheena Woods and Anita and Jim Kreider of Evergreen
Where: Harbor of Korcula Town on Korcula island.
Best meal: The best food was at Restaurant Adriana by the Apartments Adriana (apartmani-adriana.com). This was a family-owned-and-operated establishment in the lovely tiny village of Zivogosce-Blato located south of Makarska. The huge chunks of crab and the homemade sauce made the seafood lasagna there the best any of us tasted.
Best deal: In late September, there were plenty of apartments for rent that were 50 to 75 percent cheaper than hotels. (Typically $25 to $50 per couple). We didn’t need reservations. We either asked at the local Tourist Information Office for an apartment on the ocean with a view and a balcony or else we would stop at some apartment that caught our fancy. Apartments were actually more interesting than hotels, and we enjoyed having breakfast and evening drinks on the balcony. Other meals we ate at local restaurants.
Best time to go: We went in September, and it was perfect. No crowds and lovely weather. Avoid July and August if at all possible, as the Europeans are vacationing then, and it is crowded.
Best travel tip: The “Rough Guide” gave excellent descriptions of sites, and it was thorough and well researched. It was especially helpful to read their thumbnail review of the history of Croatia, and it has an excellent detailed map as well. The water shoes we brought made swimming and walking on the rocky shingle beaches a breeze.
