Blood supplies were running below normal at Colorado hospitals after last week’s blizzard kept donors away, and the state’s primary blood-collection agency said its supplies have fallen by nearly half.

With another snowstorm heading toward the Front Range, Penrose-St. Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs is hoping to attract as many donors as it can.

“The combination of the blizzard and the holiday bringing predictably low donor numbers, it made (the supply) even less,” hospital spokeswoman Beth Byer said. “But as we anticipate going into another storm, the concern is greater.”

Denver’s Bonfils Blood Center said it had a five-day supply Wednesday, up from just 3 1/2 days Friday, after the blizzard dropped up to 3 feet of snow on the Front Range.
