For so many years the news in the automotive world has been BIG, BIG, BIG.
BIG SUVs, trucks, more horsepower, 7-passengers – everything was tending
toward the monster side of the ledger.
Then, of course, we hit the gas crunch and a nascent, but growing desire for
economy and perhaps ecology in our cars.
While there have always been a few choices on the smaller side of things,
just lately there has been a BIG explosion in small. And, for the first time
in so, so many years, this BIG explosion in small has come with a decided
boost in quality that should benefit us all.
This new Honda Fit is a perfect example, but it is not alone. The subcompact
market, once thought of as a money-losing endeavor and populated with cheap,
awful cars – like the GEO/Chevrolet Metro – is awash in quality cars from
some of the world s major auto makers.
They all aim that all aim at a new idea in the automotive world: style, grace, comfort
and performance at the lower-priced end of the car scale. For 2007, small is
Beautiful.
