The bitter cold that gripped the state this weekend is expected to warm up today as sunshine moves in to begin melting much of the ice and packed snow.
Highways in the metro area this morning are treacherous and very slippery. Numerous accidents this morning have jammed up roads despite light holiday traffic.
Three accidents occurred within minutes of each other on southbound I-25 from University to Evans. At least one pickup truck rolled over in the right-hand lane. Police have not reported any injuries.
Two RTD buses were involved in minor accidents this morning and one woman slid off Santa Fe Drive down the embankment, stopping just short of the river.
Overnight temperatures dipped well below zero in many parts of the state, including Craig which reported -35 degrees, Meeker at -25, Aspen and Greeley at -15 and Loveland at -8. Denver dropped down to 0 degrees, with Centennial at -4 and Aurora at -2 degrees.
Temperatures could rise into the 30s today with bright sunshine but are expected to drop back down into the teens and single digits again tonight.
At least 60 families in the Highlands Ranch area are still forced out of their homes because of a gas leak that occurred Sunday. Xcel reports the leak should be repaired by 6 p.m. today, when the families will be allowed to return home.
Most government offices are closed today, including courts and the Postal Service. Most schools are closed today, as well as most businesses.
The Martin Luther King “Marade” will get underway at 10 a.m. this morning at the MLK statue in the southwest corner of City Park. Marchers will walk to Colfax then down Colfax to Broadway and into Civic Center.
