Blowtorch of the north.
Keith Weinman, who exited Denver media in 1998 after a nasty and well-publicized domestic-abuse case, is on the air.
With his ex-wife.
Weinman and Gail Fallen are the morning team at KCOL 600-AM, a 5,000-watt Clear Channel station in Loveland, doing talk, weather, traffic and news. You know, morning-show stuff. “It’s flat-out talk radio,” said the enthusiastic Weinman.
They blanket northern Colorado. They’re so popular, he said, they’ve overtaken KOA 850-AM as the top-rated news-talk station in the upper half of the state.
Of his four-year pairing with the former Mrs. Weinman, he said, “We have a wonderful working relationship. What we went through, we learned from it. We’re 100 percent ourselves (on the air), 100 percent honest. We spend a lot of time together. We can fight on the air, and do, and people enjoy that.”
He’d like to get back into the Denver market, where he spent 10 years at KCNC-Channel 4 and 20 years at KOA. “Do we love northern Colorado? Yes. Would we consider opportunities? Of course we would.”
Finding ESPN
Listeners still getting used to ESPN Radio’s Jan. 1 switch to ex-country outlet KCKK 1600-AM, now KEPN.
Some are wondering where to go to hear “vintage” country (try the “new” KCKK at 1510-AM) while others are in the dark because KPEN’s night-time signal is so lame.
It’s a problem, particularly in Aurora and southeast Denver, that won’t get better, says g.m. Bob Call. KEPN can’t re-direct its signal (FCC rules) but will be streaming its shows on the Internet later this month, and they’re available at ESPN.com.
Meanwhile, former KCKK morning guy Chuck Leary has retired from the mic to go into private business.
