John Vogt, a player at Cherry Creek High School in the 1960s under Fred Tesone, has been named football coach at Chaparral in Parker.

Vogt has coached in high school since the early 1990s and has college experience at Western Oregon, Northern Colorado and Wyoming. He also coached at Fairview under Sam Pagano and was part of a state championship.

“He’s a quality guy,” said Chaparral athletic director Gary Thompson after reviewing approximately 40 applicants. Vogt replaces Ed Stevens, who retired after the past season. Chaparral was 8-4 in 2006 and made it to the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.

Metro State’s baseball opener delayed

Metro State will not open its baseball season Saturday, as scheduled. Cold weather and poor field conditions caused the Roadrunners’ weekend series against Hastings (Neb.) College at Auraria Field to be canceled. The games will not be made up. Metro State will open its season at Auraria on Feb. 10 against Nebraska-Kearney.
