An 18-year-old college student from Parker, now accused by authorities of murder, gave birth late last year to a child whose body was found by police Saturday at her school in Gunnison, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday night.
The statement offered the first official details of authorities’ case against Addie Kubisiak, a freshman at Western State College in Gunnison. Kubisiak is in custody in Douglas County and is expected to be charged today.
The Sheriff’s Office has recommended charges against her of first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death, both felonies, and concealing a death, a misdemeanor.
According to the Sheriff’s Office statement, investigators believe Kubisiak gave birth while traveling in a car in Douglas County.
Sources in the Sheriff’s Office earlier told 9News that Kubisiak told investigators she was returning home to Parker from college in late 2006 when she pulled over and gave birth.
Kubisiak took the baby home to Parker, then returned with the baby to Western State, the sources said. It was unclear whether the baby was dead or alive during this period.
The sources said Kubisiak eventually hid the baby in her dormitory room at Western State. Its body had been there for “a couple of months” before it was found a few days ago, the sources said.
Gunnison police found the remains of a baby while searching Western State on Saturday, Douglas County authorities said.
The account of a full-term baby differed from a comment made Tuesday to 9News by Douglas County Chief Deputy Coroner Patricia Dunn, who referred to the victim as a “fetus.”
The cause of the baby’s death is still under investigation, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said. Investigators say they are still waiting for the results of tests to determine whether the baby was born alive.
Kubisiak attended Ponderosa High School last year.
