ap, the nation’s fourth-largest newspaper publisher and owner of The Denver Post, on Friday announced the purchase of the Santa Cruz Sentinel in Santa Cruz, Calif.
The Sentinel will become part of the California Newspapers Partnership, of which Denver-based MediaNews is the majority owner. The remaining stake in the partnership is owned by Gannett Co., the nation’s largest newspaper publisher, and Stephens Media Group.
“We are delighted to acquire the Santa Cruz Sentinel and expand our reach in this very competitive region,” said William Dean Singleton, vice chairman and chief executive of MediaNews.
The Sentinel was purchased from Community Newspaper Holdings, based in Birmingham, Ala. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Privately held MediaNews operates more than 36 newspapers across the Golden State, including the San Jose Mercury News, the Contra Costa Times and the Los Angeles Daily News.
