Where Aspen’s Winter X Games have legitimately co-opted the winter carnival title, the truest and most vintage celebration of winter fun arrives this week at Steamboat Springs. Started in 1914 with a couple of races and jumping contests designed to help snowbound Steamboaters battle cabin fever, the Winter Carnival has evolved into a festival of all things snowy. Outdoor film screenings, slide shows, chariot races, skijoring, a muzzleloading biathlon and parades highlight the Thursday through Sunday party. And of course, the world-record setting Gelandesprung ski jumpers – the original “Big Trick” skiers – whose forefathers forged the 94-year-old carnival, will display their airborne audacity on Howelsen Hill’s storied ski jumps.
