Coast Independent Review Board, a Lake Forest, Calif.-based ethics board that monitors patient safety in new drug and medical-device studies for the pharmaceutical industry, will open an operations center in Colorado Springs at the Pikes Peak Research Park.

Coast IRB plans to hire 180 people over the next five years for the center, which is expected to begin operations in May.

“Why am I expanding our business to Colorado Springs? The people, plain and simple,” Coast chief executive Darren McDaniel said in a statement. “In addition, the culture focuses on balance: a solid work ethic, a passion for the outdoors, a relaxed lifestyle and interpersonal relationships based on community.”

Coast IRB said it will host a job fair March 22-23 at the Broadmoor Hotel.

“We are delighted Coast IRB chose to locate in Colorado Springs,” said Mike Kazmierski, chief executive of the Colorado Springs Economic Development Corp. “This will be an important boost to our emerging biotech and pharmaceutical sector.”
