DENVER-
A man who barricaded himself for several hours after allegedly pointing a gun at a woman was found dead inside a home belonging to a lawyer representing a man police hoped to question about the shooting death of Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams.
Police would not confirm whether the victim was the homeowner, prominent attorney Michael J. Andre.
Officers tried to negotiate with the man and last heard from him around 3 p.m., police spokesman John White said. Officers used tear gas and other diversionary devices, then entered the unit and found the body. He refused to release additional details and said he could not confirm the victim’s identity.
“This is not the outcome we had hoped for,” White said.
Police did not identify the owner of the house, but property records show it belonged to a Andre. Friends and a colleague at the scene said it was the same Michael Andre who represented Willie Clark, who police have said they hoped could provide clues to Williams’ killer.
Williams was shot by someone who pulled next to his limo early New Year’s Day.
Clark is serving 180 days in prison on an unrelated parole violation.
Calls to Andre’s phones went unanswered, and one line had been disconnected or cut off Friday afternoon. A woman who answered the phone at his office said he was unavailable and declined to provide details.
Earlier Friday officers said they had received a report at about 9 a.m. that someone in the home may have threatened suicide.
They said a woman had gone into the house, and a man inside had pointed a gun at her. She left and called police.
Friends said the woman was a maid. Police did not comment on the woman’s identity.
A SWAT team and negotiators had been sent to the scene.
Friend Andre Walker said Andre had marital issues. Jon Thomerson, an investigator who worked with Andre, said his colleague had been stressed.
“He was showing a lot of signs of stress,” Thomerson said. “That’s kind of par for the course for him. He has a very stressful job.”
Thomerson said Andre had invited him to attend a fashion event Thursday night, but Thomerson couldn’t attend.
“His demeanor was not out of character for him,” he said.
