Gold statuettes weren’t the only things gleaming Sunday in Hollywood – metallic dresses and accessories lit up the fashion scene. From Jada Pinkett Smith’s gold Carolina Herrera to Rachel Weisz’s platinum crepe satin Vera Wang dress, lustrous fabrics clung to the curves of the industry’s leading ladies. But sometimes the effect was overdone, as in the metallic bolero Jennifer Hudson wore over her otherwise chic Oscar de la Renta gown. When dresses weren’t metallic, they were often white, powdery pink or in muted colors.
If there was a problem with Oscar fashion – on the men as well as the women – it was that the stars played it too safe.
Where they didn’t hold back was in their choice of gems. From Nicole Kidman’s 375-carat diamond cuffs and Jennifer Hudson’s vintage necklace with 32-carat yellow-diamond drop earrings and ring to Eddie Murphy’s diamond ear stud, it was a night to sparkle.
