Rene Reisshauer of the University of Denver won his third straight men’s 10-kilometer freestyle title Wednesday at the NCAA championships in Jackson, N.H., completing the course in 24 minutes, 52.2 seconds, well ahead of Utah’s Snorri Einarsson’s 25:21.6. University of Colorado freshman Matt Gelso finished sixth in 26:07.3.
Reisshauer’s performance was overshadowed by Northern Michigan’s sweep of the podium in the women’s 5-kilometer nordic race, putting the Wildcats atop the team standings with 189 points. Dartmouth is second with 166 points, followed by Denver with 146. Colorado, which was in fifth place last year before rallying in the alpine events to win the championship, is in fifth place at 131 points. Western State is 15th with 32 points.
“We’ve been in this position before; we’re not losing sight on what we need to do,” CU coach Richard Rokos said. “Some of the teams in front of us are not equipped as well, or at all, for alpine.”
Annelise Bailly of DU was fourth in the women’s 5K, two places ahead of CU junior Maria Grevsgaard.
MLL’s Outlaws tag Beardmore as new coach
The Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse announced Jim Beardmore will be their new coach in the team’s second season. Beardmore previously coached at Severna Park (Md.) High School, where he notched a 50-8 record and state championships in 2004 and 2006. Beardmore, who was an All-America goalie at the University of Maryland, replaces former Outlaws coach Jarred Testa.
Former Highlands Ranch High School and University of Connecticut star Ann Strother was traded from the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury to the Indiana Fever. Phoenix dealt Strother, the 15th pick in the 2006 draft who averaged 2.0 points her rookie season, for veteran reserve center Olympia Scott.
Running back Michael Houston, a Montbello High School graduate, has left the University of Washington football team, the school said. Houston in October was arrested for stealing a cab in Seattle and was suspended by the team.
