Clubs

There are lots of people on the club scene who act hipper-than-thou. Rare is the individual who actually is hipper-than-thou.

Steve Aoki and Danny Masterson fall into the latter category. They’re favorites at hot New York clubs like Don Hill’s and L.A. celebrity hangouts Area and Cinespace. Look for Aoki on hipster blogs like lastnightsparty.com, and there’s probably a photo of him sharing the decks with a pre-rehab Lindsay Lohan. Masterson – most famous for his role as the sarcastic Hyde on “That ’70s Show” – might be in a corner with his girlfriend, Bijou Phillips.

Both perfected the art of effortless cool a while ago, and now they’ve teamed up under their DJ names – Aoki as Kid Millionaire and Masterson as DJ Momjeans – for a brief national tour. Momjeans and Millionaire make their Denver stop at the Bluebird Theater (3317 E. Colfax Ave.) tomorrow, beginning at 8 p.m.

“We’ve been friends for quite a few years and we’ve both been DJs for a pretty long time,” said Masterson on the phone from Cincinnati last week. “We DJ’d a few parties together. Then we started doing battling, going song for song, and it became the best dance party of all time.”

The idea for the tour came out of their constant travel schedules and their mutual love for indie rock.

Aoki said they expect a diverse crowd at their gigs, and they tailor their sets to match.

“We play to the crowd,” he said. “I think any good DJ does. Our palate of musical tastes is so broad we go from hip-hop to rock to indie – we play across the board. Once we realize that everyone wants a certain sound, we kind of fool around with that.”

Added Masterson: “Our crowd is like the United Colors of Benetton, and if there’s too much of anybody it becomes uncomfortable. We like to play anything … We get the bros dancing to the electro and the indie kids dancing to the hip-hop.”

There are a few caveats for those wanting to shake it with L.A. hipster royalty.

First, the show is for ages 21 and older only. Second, it’s sponsored by Camel cigarettes, so non-smokers should be prepared for cigarette shills around every corner.

In true underground fashion, getting in is not so easy. The show’s free, but tickets are only available by visiting Rockbar (3015 E. Colfax Ave.) tonight between 10 and midnight. Free tickets have floated around town for the last few weeks, but tonight’s the last opportunity to score tickets for sure and make the scene.

Diamonds 07 tour

John Digweed has his hands full with MSTRKRFT. He’s teamed with the Canadian upstarts for the Diamonds 07 tour, and the duo’s a dance-floor force to be reckoned with. Their originals have a burly, nasty, bassy sound, plus they’re sitting on a huge stockpile of rock remixes to keep things fresh.

The Diamonds 07 tour hits Vinyl (1082 S. Broadway) at 9 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $20, and are available at groovetickets.com.

Partying for charity

Want to see how tiny a martini glass looks in a football player’s hands? Ever wonder how fast a NASCAR driver can pour a mojito? If so, head to the Purple Martini’s Denver Tech Center location (8000 E. Belleview Ave.) Thursday for a celebrity bartending night to benefit the Fetal Hope Foundation. The foundation provides support for pregnant women who’ve been diagnosed with a fetal syndrome.

A herd of former Broncos are slated to sling drinks, including Ron Egloff, Dave Studdard and Ralph Tamm, along with NASCAR racer Jim Bob Rogers, former heavyweight boxer Ron Lyle and others.

Tickets, available in advance or at the door, are $20 per person, and include a complimentary Bacardi drink, a T-shirt and entry in a drawing for door prizes. Advance tickets can be purchased at fetalhope.org or by calling 1-877-789-HOPE.
